Start with the direction

Choose Portrait or Landscape

Rectangle canvas prints can be tall or wide. Here, portrait and landscape describe the canvas direction, rather than the subject of your photograph.

Portrait — taller than it is wide

Consider a vertical composition for a full-length portrait, an upright artwork or a narrow wall. Check that the crop leaves room around the subject.

Example: a 40 × 60 cm canvas in portrait orientation is 40 cm wide and 60 cm high.

Landscape — wider than it is tall

Consider a horizontal composition for a group photograph, a wide scene or a space above furniture. Keep people and important details within the front image area.

Example: the same size in landscape orientation is 60 cm wide and 40 cm high.

Select Portrait or Landscape on the rectangle canvas product page, then check the design preview. For an especially wide image, compare our panoramic canvas prints.

Size, shape and your photograph

Compare Rectangle Canvas Sizes

Two rectangular canvases can have different proportions. Start with the shape of your original photo, then choose a size that fits the wall. A closer ratio match usually means less cropping.

2:3

A longer rectangle

Example: 40 × 60 cm

3:4

A moderate rectangle

Example: 60 × 80 cm

4:5

A fuller rectangle

Example: 40 × 50 cm

Size options on our rectangle canvas print product, in cm (short side × long side). Other listings in this collection may have different sizes and proportions.
Short:long ratio Available size pairs (cm) How to compare

  • 40 × 60
  • 50 × 75
  • 60 × 90

3:4
  • 30 × 40
  • 60 × 80
  • 75 × 100
  • 90 × 120
A less elongated shape. In landscape orientation, the width:height ratio is 4:3.

Shopping from an inch-based size name?

Some individual products in this collection use names such as 8 × 12 or 16 × 20. Use the centimetre dimensions shown on that product for your order. Inch-based names and rounded centimetre sizes are not always exact mathematical equivalents.

Need a size that is not listed?

Send us the required width, height, orientation and image before ordering. We can check whether a custom size is suitable and provide a quote.

Plan the display

Check the Fit on Your Wall

  1. Mark the outline

Measure the usable wall area and mark your proposed canvas width and height with removable paper or suitable low-tack tape.

  2. View it from the room

Step back to your usual viewing position. Check its relationship to the sofa, bed, desk or surrounding pictures, rather than judging the size on screen alone.

  3. Allow for the whole display

For several canvases, include the gaps. If you add a floating frame, check its overall outside dimensions rather than using only the canvas image size.

If a square composition would suit the photo better, compare square canvas prints. For a larger wall, browse large canvas prints or canvas gallery wall sets.

Protect the important details

Check Your Photo Crop and Canvas Edges

Start with the original image

Use the original photo or artwork file where possible. A screenshot or a copy saved from social media may contain less detail. For a larger rectangle, inspect faces, fine text and important features at the intended print size.

If you are unsure, email your image and proposed size to support@customcanvasonline.com.au for advice before ordering.

Review the front and the sides

The front crop fits your photo to the selected rectangle. The wrap determines how the sides look. Leave a safe area around faces, text and other important details, then review both parts in the online preview.

Mirror or stretch wrap can create side artwork, but neither guarantees that every photo will fit every rectangle size without a front crop.

Common canvas wrap choices. Confirm the available options on your selected product.
Edge finish How it looks What to check
Gallery wrap The image continues around the canvas sides. Keep important subjects clear of the edges so they do not wrap away from the front.
Mirror wrap The image edges are reflected onto the sides. The selected rectangle proportions may still require a crop on the front.
Stretch wrap The image edges are stretched out to fill the canvas sides. Side details may look elongated. Check the front crop as well as the edge preview.
Solid colour wrap The sides use a plain colour; listed as Color Wrap on the product. Confirm the available colour and how it will look beside the front image.

A Stretched Canvas or a Decorative Outer Frame?

Example of a stretched rectangle canvas. Check the selected product for its current specifications and hanging details.

Stretched rectangle canvas

The rectangle canvas print is printed on canvas and stretched over an internal wooden frame. The printed sides remain visible. It is a ready-to-hang canvas product; use fixings suitable for your wall.

Want a floating frame around it?

A decorative outer frame is a separate finish. Browse floating frame canvas prints for a printed canvas with an outer frame, or frame-only floating frames if you already have a canvas to frame.

Rectangle Canvas Print FAQs

Answers about sizes, orientation, cropping and choosing the right finished canvas.

Do all rectangle canvas sizes have the same proportions?

No. For example, 40 × 60 cm is 2:3, while 40 × 50 cm is 4:5. Match the photo shape as well as the wall size, then check the preview. See the size and ratio comparison.

Can I choose portrait or landscape?

Yes. The rectangle canvas product has a Portrait or Landscape option. Portrait means taller than wide; landscape means wider than tall. Confirm the orientation and image placement before ordering.

Will my photo need to be cropped?

It may, especially if the photo and canvas have different proportions. A matching ratio can reduce cropping, but you should still check the wrap and safe area. Send us the original image and intended size if important details sit close to the edges.

Why do some products use inch-based size names?

Some size-specific listings use familiar inch-based names. Their stated centimetre dimensions can be rounded, so use the measurements shown on the actual product when choosing and ordering. If you need an exact fit, contact us before placing the order.

Can I order a custom rectangle size?

Contact us with the required width, height, orientation and image. We will check suitability and provide a quote before you order; an unlisted size is not automatically available through the standard selector.

Does a stretched canvas include a floating frame?

The stretched rectangle canvas has an internal wooden frame. A decorative floating outer frame is a separate finish. Choose the appropriate floating frame product if you want a visible frame around the canvas.
